Shark Fishing Rigs
Shark Fishing Rigs are specialized fishing setups designed to catch sharks safely and effectively. They typically consist of strong, heavy-duty components to handle the power and teeth of large sharks. Most shark rigs feature a steel or wire leader to prevent bite-offs, heavy circle or J-hooks (8/0 to 20/0 size), and robust swivels and clips to reduce line twist and facilitate quick changes.
There are two main types of shark rigs: bottom rigs and float rigs. Bottom rigs are used when fishing from the shore or boat in deeper water, with the bait resting on or near the seafloor. Float rigs suspend the bait at a chosen depth using a balloon or foam float, ideal for targeting sharks cruising mid-water.
Common bait includes oily fish like mackerel, bonito, or mullet, which release scent to attract sharks. Weights vary depending on current and conditions but are typically 4–16 ounces.
Safety and conservation are vital. Using circle hooks helps reduce deep hooking, increasing the chances of a healthy release. Anglers must also follow local regulations, including gear restrictions and catch limits. Properly built shark rigs are crucial for both successful catches and responsible fishing practices.
